Sunflower husk pellets are a solid biofuel produced from sunflower shells generated during the processing of sunflower seeds. Large quantities of husks remain after sunflower oil production. Instead of treating this material only as agricultural waste, it can be processed into compact fuel pellets for heating systems.
The pelletizing process makes the raw material easier to handle, store and transport. Sunflower pellets can also be used with automated boilers equipped with suitable fuel feeding systems.
Sunflower Pellet Production Process
The production line normally includes several important stages:
Crushing. Sunflower husks are reduced to a suitable particle size. The required fraction depends on the raw material and pellet mill configuration.
Drying. If the material contains too much moisture, it is dried before pelletizing. A moisture level of approximately 8–10% is commonly targeted for stable production.
Pelletizing. Prepared biomass is compressed through the holes of a die under high pressure. The material forms cylindrical pellets with a defined diameter.
Cooling and cleaning. Fresh pellets leave the pellet mill at an elevated temperature. A cooling system reduces their temperature and separates dust and fine particles.
Storage. The finished pellets can be packed or transferred to suitable storage equipment.
| Parameter | Typical value |
| Diameter | 4–10 mm |
| Length | up to 50 mm |
| Moisture | approx. 8–10% |
| Shape | cylindrical |
Good-quality sunflower husk pellets should have a consistent shape, sufficient mechanical strength and low dust content. Proper storage is also important because moisture can reduce pellet durability and negatively affect fuel handling.
Advantages of Sunflower Husk Fuel
Sunflower pellets can be used for heating private houses, farms, workshops and production facilities. Their compact size allows convenient transportation and automated feeding into suitable heating equipment.
A stable pellet production process requires correctly selected and matched machinery. Depending on the required capacity, a production line may include a crusher, dryer, pellet mill, cooler and conveying system.
